Lost for Words

How on earth can we begin to describe God? The Feast of the Holy Trinity often leaves us baffled! This assembly explores how God is beyond the words we have!

Opening Activity: Lost for Words!

Ask for two volunteers. Give one of them a word at a time and ask them to describe the word to the other person—without actually using the word! For example, giraffe, stone, universe, coffee, television, flannel. Pit them against the clock. How difficult was it? Were there times when they were lost for words, or when the other person couldn’t get the word? Sometimes, we are lost for words, or we can find it difficult to describe something. If that’s true of random items, just think how it’s difficult sometimes to express how we feel about certain things. Some times people says, ‘I’m lost for words’ or ‘I’m speechless.’ It means that they can’t find the right words to describe how they are feeling.

How do we describe God? We are lost for words!
When we talk about God we can certainly be lost for words. How do you begin to describe God? Quite often we will describe God in terms of what he is not, for example: invisible, invincible, immortal, and so on. IN whatever way we try to describe God or try to get to grips with who he is we will always be lost for words.

God is above and beyond us but still comes close to us!
The Holy Trinity is how Christians through the ages have tried to get to grips with who God is, tried to find words to describe or talk about God. The Holy Trinity means that God is known as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Sometimes, this can leave us rather confused. But it reminds us that God is above and beyond us, that we can’t pin God down and define him, or sum him up in our words. He has revealed himself to us in certain ways, but we are still left with a mystery.
He is above and beyond us but he calls us to be close to him, to know him as a loving Father
He is above and beyond us but he has come close to us in Jesus and shown us how much he loves us.
He has filled us with his presence through the Holy Spirit so that we may be holy as God is holy.

Yes, thinking about God and talking about God can leave us lost for words.

Reflect
Have you ever been lost for words?
How would you describe God?
What does it mean to think about God as a Mystery?
What does it mean for us for God to reveal himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

Prayer
All powerful God,
you are above and beyond us
but you want us to know you.
We thank you for drawing us into your life.
Help us to grow closer to you each day.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
