Don't Play with your Food!

Harvest remains as popular as ever and, these days, carries with it an environmental message and the need to be good stewards of God’s creation.

Opening Activity:

Take various items of fruit (orange, banana, apple etc) and a permanent marker pen. Tell the young people that you have a remarkable gift—that you can transform simple things like apples and oranges into remarkable caricatures of people! Draw various faces—some of the pupils, and perhaps some of the teachers who are game for a laugh!

How we play with food!
What you have been doing, of course, is playing around with food. We shouldn’t really play with our food, should we? Were you ever told that by your parents? ‘Don’t play with your food!’ On one level we actually do play around with out food: we use pesticides and other chemicals and additives in order to mass produce our food, we throw away and waste so much food, as though it’s not really valuable. Food is not just a luxury but a necessity. It is something we need.

Thank God!
Today we thank God for everything that he has given us, but particularly for our food and drink. We pray that we may value the food we have, and not take it for granted. We pray that we may learn to share what we have with those who don’t have as much as we do. (You may want to assure them that the food you have used in the assembly won’t be wasted: that you will take the fruit home, peel it and eat it!

God our Creator, help us to value everything we have been given. Help us to value our food and to share our gifts with those in need.
